When are property taxes due in Oneida, Madison and Herkimer County, NY?
Short answer: In Central New York most home owners pay town and county tax in January (penalty-free through January 31 in Oneida County towns) and school tax in September or October; the cities of Utica and Rome bill on their own calendars, and every town and school district sets its own dates.
The usual pattern
Town and county taxes: collected in the winter, January to March. In the Oneida County towns we checked there is no penalty through January 31, then a penalty each month in February and March, after which the county takes over. Herkimer County towns collect from January 1 to March 31.
School taxes: collected in the fall, from September 1. Examples we read: Whitesboro school tax is penalty-free September 1 to 30 and 5% in October; Frankfort-Schuyler is penalty-free in September and 2% from October 1 to November 2; the City of Rome collects school tax in two halves due October 31 and April 30.
Village taxes (where there is a village) have their own dates: in Whitesboro and Yorkville they are collected June to September.
The cities bill differently
The City of Utica bills city tax in March and the school tax in August; the City of Rome collects county tax by February 28 and city and school tax in halves due April 30 and October 31. See our Utica and Rome guides for the details.
Where the exact date for your home is
Your tax bill. The town tax collector’s notice, the school district’s notice and the county each print the dates for that year, and they can change slightly from year to year. Guides for each area: Oneida County towns, Whitestown and Whitesboro, Herkimer County, the City of Utica and the City of Rome.
Madison County: we have not yet confirmed the town and school due dates from an official source, so we do not state them here. The county treasurer in Wampsville and each town collector can give them.
