Herkimer County, NY property tax due dates: town, county and school taxes
Short answer: In Herkimer County, town and county taxes are collected by the town from January 1 to March 31 and school taxes in the fall, from September 1 (September is penalty-free in the district we checked, with 2% added in October); what is unpaid then goes to the Herkimer County Treasurer.
Town and county taxes
The Town of Herkimer Receiver of Taxes collects town and county taxes from January 1 to March 31, at the Herkimer Town Offices, 114 North Prospect Street, Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., phone (315) 866-8101. Other towns run their own offices and hours, so check the notice on your bill.
School taxes
School taxes are collected in the fall. The Town of Herkimer collects them from September 1 to October 31. The Frankfort-Schuyler school district, for example, takes payment without penalty from September 1 to September 30, adds 2% from October 1 to November 2, and returns what is still unpaid to Herkimer County after that. Each district sets its own dates, so check the notice for your district.
Unpaid taxes
Taxes not paid by the town or school deadline go to the Herkimer County Treasurer’s Office, 109 Mary Street, Herkimer, phone (315) 867-1146. The Treasurer also publishes each town, village and school bill and roll online.
